I don't think I realized until I was at the end of my speech just how many times I mentioned you. You just happened to edit two of my very favorite books, that's all. If people ask how much you paid me, you can just smile enigmatically and say, "A LOT!"

As for decline letters, I was so gobsmacked by the term--hadn't heard it before I saw it on this blog as I was writing my speech. My brother & I have been working on a MS that's on an editor's desk right now, and I know when we get that letter, I'll feel so much better knowing we were just declined instead of rejected.

I love the One-on-One Conference--we in NJ are so grateful to all the editors, agents, authors, illustrators, and other book people (not to mention all the mentees) to give up a Saturday to schlep down to Piscataway, which is not exactly in the hub of the universe, and donate their collective wisdom. (Tokyo? Hong Kong? Are they in NJ, too?) It is a jam-packed day that leaves everyone feeling good about what we do, children's book-wise.

Judy Freeman
www.JudyReadsBooks.com
www.ReadKiddoRead.comAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21394993.post-31685060125791721822009-10-21T11:05:13.921-04:002009-10-21T11:05:13.921-04:00This sounds a fascinating conference.

I wish I would've been able to talk with you more than the two minutes prior to the keynote, though! (We sat next to each other.)

Anyway, I posted on my critique group's blog (The First Novels Club) about the conference in two parts, if you'd like to check it out.
Part 1
Part 2 <-- you're mentioned here!

Thanks again!Donna Gambalehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00317767593205769881noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21394993.post-52407786665204106512009-10-19T22:27:05.186-04:002009-10-19T22:27:05.186-04:00This was my first One-on-One Plus Conference (ment...This was my first One-on-One Plus Conference (mentee) and I agree that the set-up is unique. It was very informative and I got great feedback and suggestions for improving my portfolio.

Thank you (and all other editors, agents, authors and illustrators) for taking the time to share your ideas and expertise!Mônicahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08414648231621190122noreply@blogger.com
